Two AK-47 assault rifles, used by soldiers in war, were among a cache of guns and ammunition recovered yesterday by police at Las Cuevas, a known entry point for illegal drugs.
Police are now searching for a 30-year-old man, of Paramin, Maraval, who they say can assist them with their investigations into the discovery of guns.
According to police reports officers of the North Eastern Division Task Force carried out a series of raids between 5 pm on Monday to 3.30 am yesterday morning along North Coast Road, Maracas and Las Cuevas.
The exercise was spearheaded by Sgt Cornelius Samuel and supervised by Cpls Small and Quashie. Police said they found a loaded .38 revolver, with two rounds of ammunition, in a vacant lot of land near Las Cuevas village. A quantity of high grade Kush marijuana was also found at the scene.
The officers later found a .40 calibre pistol with three rounds of ammunition hidden in a banana patch. Some time later they went to Rincon Road, Las Cuevas, where they found and seized three rifles, two of them AK-47, and another rusty single shot rifle. The officers also found 27 rounds of 7.62 ammunition and another small quantity of Kush marijuana.
The total weight of the drugs, police said, was five kilogrammes which carried an estimated street value of $100,000.
No one was arrested in connection with any of the seizures.
