One day after a couple was held for the abuse of a two-year-old, a 39-year-old geriatric nurse was held yesterday for allegedly assaulting an elderly man.
Police said the woman, who lives in Cumuto, was arrested at her work place on Agra Street, St James, around 12.15 pm. She was then taken to the St James Police Station for questioning.
The caregiver shot into the public limelight on Thursday after a video of her standing on an elderly man was circulated on social media and was subsequently highlighted by the local media.
The woman was shown standing on the belly of a frail man, said to be 89 years. The woman appeared to be scolding the man for something he had done to either another resident of the home or an employee. After threatening the man with further harm the woman stepped off him and walked away.
This incident came days after another video was posted to social media showing the abuse of an infant girl at the hands of a man, who pummeled the child because she failed to drink from a bottle of milk.
The man and his wife, a Jamaican national, were arrested at an apartment in San Fernando on Thursday.
The latest incident yesterday brought a response from Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley while on his first official visit to Tobago.
“It is such a disgusting view I could not believe it and persons like that should be identified and prosecuted. That is something I hope that the authorities would find the person and I mean F-I-N-D and such a person should feel the full brunt of the law,” he said.
Saying social media was giving society a window into some aspects of human behaviour not privy to before, he added:
“I felt so sad just to view that and coming from what had happened with the child and what happened here in Tobago with that chopping, we haven’t been viewed very well and it’s something that I hope we are seeing the last of.
