Sangre Grande Magistrates’ Court is expected to be reopened on Tuesday.

The court was temporarily closed to the public last Monday to facilitate repair works on the leaking roof and malfunctioning air conditioning units.

There was also a rat infestation.

Cases were transferred to the Arima Magistrates’ Court in the interim.

Yesterday the contractor repairing the building, which housed the First and Second Magistrates’ Courts as well as the administrative staff and Justice of the Peace, said 95 per cent of the work has been completed and the facility will be ready on Tuesday.

A senior police officer at the Eastern Division said this has caused some inconvenience for court and process staff who have to go to Arima where they are forced to spend extra money on travelling.

People who want to lodge complaints related to family matters, domestic violence, and maintenance have also been encountering problems.

Attorneys who practice at the court said no one listened to their complaints, which also included concerns over the absence of a magistrate in the second court.

Attorney Shivanand Dubay said “justice delayed is justice denied.

Those charged for different offences now have their matters prolonged again.”
