It is time we properly utilise the uniqueness of the steelpan as a way to earn revenue for this country, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has said.

Rowley said because of the economic downturn currently facing the country it was time to put all revenue earners to use.

He said the steelpan can lead the proposed “quantum leap” for tourism that the Government intends to implement.

He called for the implementation of an annual Steel Band Music Festival and monthly shows incorporating steelpans and other initiatives to attract tourists and foreign currency. Rowley made the statements while delivering the feature address at the Sogren Trace Recreational Ground last night as the Laventille community celebrated the success of three steel bands from the area at this year’s Panorama competition.

Rowley promised the Laventille community that even in the midst of the financial difficulties facing the country he will find money to help build back their community.

While last night’s event brought the Desperadoes, Sound Specialists and Serenades together there were several empty seats because of the rising crime in the community.

Kern John the captain for Sounds Specialists said several invited guests were too afraid to attend. (JJ)
