As a tradition, every Old Year’s night, Zwade Taylor would leave his Sudama Alley home and venture a short distance away to his brother’s home to ring in the New Year surrounded by family.
But on December 31, 2015, the trip would be Taylor’s last, as he was shot while walking through a short cut to his brother’s house.
His sister-in-law Keisha Taylor told the T&T Guardian, yesterday, Taylor was walking through Dandy Lane around 10.15 pm when he was shot.
Bleeding profusely, Taylor managed to run approximately 200 feet, before collapsing in his brother’s arms.
His brother was too distraught to speak to members of the media yesterday, but Keisha recounted the events of the night.
“We heard some sounds, but we thought it was just fireworks,” Keisha said. “Then we heard a little noise and I saw my brother-in-law come in the door, gasping for breath.
“We thought it was an asthma attack or something and we called the ambulance, but then when we moved him we saw there was blood on the ground, he had been shot in the back. He got shot in the next street, ran through the track and came straight by us.”
When an ambulance responded a short while later, Taylor was taken to the Siparia Health Facility, where he was pronounced dead.
Keisha said she did not know why anyone would want to kill Taylor, but noted that his gold chain was missing.
“I don’t know why anyone would do that. He had on his gold chain earlier that day and it was missing, so it could have been a robbery.” She said Taylor lived alone and worked at LNG in Point Fortin.
WPC Serioux of the Siparia Homicide is continuing investigations.
