Seven babies were born at the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH) on New Year’s day.

The first baby, a girl, was born at 1.55 am to Trisha Bridgemohan.

Speaking to reporters at her bedside yesterday, Bridgemohan gushed over her baby girl.

She said she has already chosen a name for the child, who came a few days late.

“Her name is Leah Esther,” she said proudly.

Bridgemohan, 35, also has a 14-year-old son.

Asked how she felt to have the first baby in South for the New Year, she said, “I am just so happy, but I would have felt the same no matter what day she was born.”

Indranie Jaimungal, 23, and her husband, Mark Jaimungal, welcomed their second child at 3 am.

The bouncing baby boy, whom the Tabaquite couple have named Daniel, already has the full attention of his older brother, three-year-old Dillon.

During an interview with reporters yesterday, Dillon sat on his father’s lap and stared at the baby, only sparing the cameras surrounding his family a brief glance.

Indranie said she was admitted to SFGH on Old Year’s morning.

Her baby was already six days overdue.

“The due date was December 24, so we were expecting him for Christmas,” she said.

Asked how he felt, Mark said, “Thank God everything worked out okay. New baby for the new year.”

Registered nurse Sandra Balgobin-Dwarika got a chance to be on the other side of the health care system yesterday when she gave birth to her first child yesterday.

Dwarika said she had not chosen a name yet for her baby girl. She said all she wanted was for her daughter to be happy and successful in life.

“We waited a long time for this baby and I am very happy she is here.”

However, it’s not all joy for Dwarika and her husband, who was sent home last month when steel giant Arcelor Mittal shut down its operations in T&T.

“He was laid off from Mittal last month and, right now, I’m still a nurse so we live on my salary for right now,” she said.

She said her husband worked as a bear fitter at the company.

The other four women to give birth at SFGH yesterday were Susan Poliah, who welcomed a bouncing baby boy at 5.22 am; Rima Ramcharan who had a baby girl at 6.37; Cheryl Roberts who also had a baby girl at 6.45 am; and Asha Ramdass whose son was born at 7.27 am.
