A Chaguanas businessman was among five people held by police after they seized more than $6 million in marijuana and cocaine in central Trinidad on Wednesday night.

The group, which included a Colombian woman, was arrested around 10 pm by detectives of the Organised Crime, Narcotics and Firearms Bureau (OCNFB) after they searched a house in Enterprise, Chaguanas and found the group and the drugs.

Police allegedly found 20 kilos of cocaine and 300 kilos of marijuana which carries a wholesale value of between $80,000 and $100,000 a kilo, and $15,000 to $20,000 a kilo, respectively.

The group is detained at the Woodbrook and Belmont Police Stations up to late yesterday and were being questioned by detectives, who believe that the bust would cause a significant dent in the local drug trade.

The 50 year-old businessman, who cannot be named until he is charged, has been in and out of jail for the past decade on a number of charges, including kidnapping, most of which were eventually dismissed by the court.

Contacted yesterday, investigators refused to say if more arrests were expected as they said the investigation was at a sensitive stage.

The group is expected to be questioned over the next couple of days and is expected to appear in court to answer drug-trafficking charges next week.
