Two cousins, who are related to an inmate who was allegedly beaten by prison officers on Monday, have surrendered to police as the probe into the killing of superintendent David Millette continues. The men surrendered with their attorney CJ Williams on Tuesday night and yesterday afternoon.

The first man, 20, surrendered to Insp Roger Alexander on Tuesday after being informed he was wanted by police. He claimed police were searching for him at his Cipriani Avenue, Morvant, home and at another relative’s home in Maloney.

His attorney said the man was fearful for his life and decided to surrender at the Morvant Police Station to clear his name. Around 5 pm yesterday another relative of the inmate, who lives at Richplain, Diego Martin, surrendered to Alexander at Richmond Street, Port-of-Spain. Police said both men were being sought in connection with gang-related activities, gun-related offences and other serious offences.

An additional eight men held by North Eastern Division officers on Monday night through Tuesday are also in police custody in relation to gang activities, gun-related offences and serious offences, including murder. Four other men held by Northern Division officers were questioned and subsequently released, police said.

Millette, 50, was gunned down in the driveway of his home at Second Caledonia, Morvant, around 8.30 am on Monday. A statement from the Police Service said Millette was seated in his car when he was approached by four men, two of whom opened from either side, killing him instantly.

In an unrelated incident, a 28-year old Sangre Grande man was held on Wednesday in connection with the murder of retired nurse Savitri Juteram. The suspect, police said, lived on the same street as Juteram and was held in an early morning exercise at Ojoe Road, Sangre Grande.

The exercise was conducted between 1 am and 5 am by officers of the Eastern Division Task Force led by Cpl Osouna. The man was handed over to the Region II Homicide Division in Arouca. Juteram, a mother of five, and grandmother of seven, was found dead in her home on October 18. She died from acute asphyxia after a towel was stuffed in her mouth.
