A teenager was denied bail yesterday when he came before a San Fernando magistrate charged with assault with intent to rob, while armed with a firearm.

The youngster, who cannot be named because of his age, stood before Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington in the San Fernando Magistrates Court.

According to the charge read by court prosecutor Cleyon Seedan, on October 28, at Tarouba Link Road, the teen walked up to the driver of a wrecker, who was seated in his vehicle, and demanded money.

However, the teen’s mother who appeared in court yesterday told Wellington her son was wrongfully arrested.

Wellington advised her of her right to sue the State if she believed her son was wrongfully arrested but told her the teen would not be granted bail.

He cited the Bail Amendment Act 2015, which states that those accused of being in possession of a firearm or an imitation firearm to commit an offence cannot be granted bail for the first 120 days of their remand.

Wellington adjourned the matter until November 19.
