The South-West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA) is probing a possible maternal death and infant death at the San Fernando General Hospital.
In a media release yesterday, the SWRHA offered condolences to the family of Leela Mahase, who delivered her baby at the hospital 19 days ago. However, Mahase returned to the hospital with an acute medical emergency on Sunday.
SWRHA CEO Gail Miller-Meade said an autopsy was supposed to be done yesterday and she was awaiting the report. She said because the woman’s death fell within the period of monitoring maternal patients after pregnancy, their adverse events protocol would have kicked in, therefore an investigation into how the woman died was necessary.
The release said that the SWRHA has been in contact with the family to discuss their concerns and has offered all necessary counselling in this situation.
“The death of Ms Mahase is being reviewed with the necessary urgency and in accordance with the relevant protocols and procedures and the findings would be made available to the family.”
Meanwhile, another investigation has been launched into the death of a baby who was born last week but remained in the neonatal ward.
