After 10 days on the run, the 35-year-old labourer suspected in the hit-and-run accident which killed Khemchand Roopnarine and his wife Patricia Harripersad has surrendered to police.
But up to late yesterday, the suspect had not admitted to being in the driver’s seat of the silver Nissan Tiida when the Penal couple was killed.
Investigators said the suspect and his attorney Ramnarine Soorjansingh arrived at the Penal Police Station around midday to be interviewed.
Investigators were also said to be still checking video footage from properties along the Penal Rock Road, Penal, to help them build a case. They will also compare his statement to what his 44-year-old girlfriend said while in custody last week.
Around 9.30 pm on November 5, the couple was walking along the Penal Rock Road with their sons, Brandon, nine and Darion, five, after spending the evening at a relative’s home. As they neared their home, Khemchand and Patricia were struck from behind by a silver Nissan Tiida. The boys escaped injury because they had walked ahead. The driver sped off as the boys watched in horror. Khemchand and Patricia died within seconds.
The following morning, the 44-year-old woman, a school teacher, was arrested while trying to repair the car at a straightener’s garage in the area. She said she owned the car but claimed she loaned it to her boyfriend on the day of the crash. Following the incident, she said her boyfriend brought the car back to her and left.
The woman was released after two days and her boyfriend had not been seen until yesterday. Sgt Parasram in continuing inquiries.
