A 47-year-old man from Diego Martin and his 21-year-old son have been arrested by police for possession of almost 400 rounds of assorted ammunition.

According to reports, around 10 pm on Tuesday officers from the Central Division, led by Sgt Andy Mohammed and Cpl Kevin Neptune, carried out search at a house at Warren Road, Munroe Road, Cunupia.

Police arrested the father and son after they found 249 rounds of 5.56 calibre ammunition, 99 rounds of .38 calibre ammunition and 46 rounds of 9mm ammunition in the house.

Police also recovered four illegal firearms and a large quantity of marijuana during an anti-crime exercise in Belmont yesterday morning.

The exercise was conducted between 4 am and 8 am by officers of the Inter Agency Task Force (IATF)’s Duncan Street Police Post.

The officers arrested one man and recovered one pistol, three revolvers and an AR15 assault rifle as well as 23 kilos of marijuana.

All three suspects remained detained up to late yesterday.

The firearms were sent to Forensic Science Centre, St James, for ballistic testing to determine if they had been used in recent murders and shootings.

Police are also monitoring an increase in people posting photographs posing with illegal firearms on social media.

Their interest came after a series of photographs of a man and woman, with their faces exposed, posing with a pair of assault rifles were widely circulated yesterday. The photos drew varying comments from people on social media, many wondering whether how the criminal element continues to have access to such high-tech weaponry and are also brazen enough to show it off publicly on social media.

No arrests were made up to late yesterday.

Early this month, a video with two teenagers posing with what appeared to firearms was also circulated. One of the teenagers was arrested after he went to police to report as a condition of his bail for an unrelated offence and was recognised from the video.

However, he could not be charged as police did not recover the gun in a subsequent search on his house.
