Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has filed her nomination papers to contest the seat of UNC leader.
She did so yesterday at the UNC headquarters in Couva.
Accompanying her was Jearlean John, who also filed for the post of deputy political leader of the party. Persad-Bissessar said she felt confident that a team of new faces and those with experience were able to come on board.
She said the challenge was to get past the elections and move on. She said the UNC has been a strong party, becoming “more united and focused against the real enemy the PNM.”
When asked about the decision of Vasant Bharath not to contest she said she wished him good luck in his future endeavours.
She said it was Bharath’s choice not to contest. John said times have become troubling and she had no intention to sit on the sideline and complain but step into the ring and make a contribution.
