A grandmother and great-grandmother of Sangre Grande is warded in serious but stable condition at hospital after she was beaten by a relative with a hammer and piece of wood about her body in the early hours of yesterday morning.
The victim, Lucy Bano, a 90-year-old pensioner of Palmiste Drive, Coalmine, suffered fractures to her arms and legs, with serious injuries to her face after being beaten by the relative.
Sangre Grande police have since detained a 48-year-old relative, who is to be charged with wounding and other related criminal offences.
According to reports, at around 1.15 am Bano was at her home when a close relative who lives in St Augustine entered her home. An argument ensued between the woman and her relative who took a hammer and began to beat her about the body. He later used a piece of 4x4 wood to strike her about her arms, legs, body and face.
Bano shouted for help and one of her granddaughters went to her assistance. When she saw the man beating Bano, the granddaughter called the Sangre Grande Police Station and officers responded within minutes.
Officers of the Eastern Crime Unit including PCs Sankar, Gadar and WPC Gonzales arrived at Bano's residence and were reportedly met with strong resistance from the male relative and had to call for back up.
Police said the man was subdued, arrested and taken to Sangre Grande Police Station. Bano who was bleeding profusely was placed in a police vehicle and rushed to hospital where she was treated by doctors.
