In an effort to further encourage the development of cricket among the nation’s youth and contribute to the all-round development of young women, cricketer Daren Ganga has pledged to provide cricketing kits for students at the St Augustine Girls’ High School (SAGHS) in order to facilitate the team’s easy entry into the sport.

The announcement was made as Ganga delivered the feature address at the 2015 graduation exercise at the school’s Anna Mahase Auditorium, Evans Street, Curepe, yesterday.

It prompted a round of applause from those gathered in the packed hall as well as under tents erected on the school’s compound.

Ganga urged the graduates to strive always for success in their academic and personal lives as he promised the kits would be donated through the Daren Ganga Foundation.

Recalling his first visit to SAGHS during his time as a student at Naparima College, Ganga boasted of having tasted the “best brownies” at the school.

Reminding everyone that they needed to acknowledge God’s presence in their daily lives, he implored them to “bow your head for ten seconds to thank Him for waking you up this morning, when so many in the world who hoped to wake up today, did not for whatever reason.”

Referring to the global situation, he continued: “When you read reports of the many atrocities committed worldwide, we in T&T are very fortunate from day-to-day.”

Ganga told the graduates to use their talents and precious gifts wisely as he drove home the reality that “tragically, so many are born with talents but do not make use of them.”

Telling the students that time and the power of choice were the two most important factors they would ever have to consider, he urged them to make the right choice as they moved onto the next phase of their academic journey.

School’s Accomplishments

Delivering the principal’s report, Joanne Mahadeo spoke of the school’s accomplishments in drama, sports and academics throughout the year.

Acknowledging the professional achievements of several members of staff, Mahadeo also spoke of the existing vacancies at the school, in addition to the burdens left as some teachers embarked on maternity and sick leave, forcing their colleagues to step in so valuable teaching time would not be lost.

Hoping for further upgrades to the school’s infrastructure, such as laboratories, a multi-purpose hall, a gym and a dance studio, Mahadeo thanked both the Presbyterian Board and the Parent/Teacher Association for their hard work and input to ensure the school’s operations were not hampered in any way as construction work continued at the school.
