An Arima man was jailed for a year and a half on Monday after pleading guilty to possession of an illegal firearm and two rounds of ammunition which were found by police at his home.
Junior Perreira, 40, of Maturita Road, Arima, was arrested on October 8 by officers of the Northern Division Task Force (East), along with his companion Vanessa Francis, 24. Police said they went to the couple’s home around 6 pm and found the loaded gun. The couple first appeared before Magistrate Avason Quinlan on Monday and returned for sentencing on Tuesday.
Quinlan sentenced Perreira to 18 months in jail while his female companion will reappear on March 25, 2016, after being granted $40,000 bail.
In an unrelated incident prisons officer Shervon Carrera, who has five years service, was granted $200,000 bail after he appeared in court yesterday charged with being in possession of an illegal firearm.
Carrera, 30, of Arouca Gardens, was arrested along with 22-year-old mechanic Shaquille Isaac last Saturday along Broadway Road, Arima.
Police said that the pair were in a red Toyota Corolla heading west near the Arima Police Station when officers stopped them. The vehicle was searched and the gun was allegedly found inside. Both men appeared before Quinlan yesterday and were each granted $200,000 bail.
They will reappear in court on November 11.
