Organisers of the Hardcore event which took place on Sunday have expressed their condolences following the death of a participant.
While participating in the event, a 59-year-old man, Neil Birbal collapsed and was later pronounced dead at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope.
Organisers yesterday said they were deeply saddened by the tragedy.
“Neil collapsed a short distance from the start of the course yesterday.
“Our medical team treated Neil on the spot before rushing him to Mount Hope. The thoughts and prayers of the Hardcore team, and those of thousands of members of the Hardcore community, are with Neil’s family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.”
Birbal collapsed after the first obstacle which saw participants walking through chilled water before continuing the course.
The event, which featured 20 obstacles is a fitness challenge which participants train for months in advance.
It is the first such incident reported from the annual event.
