Police believe they have made an dent in a series of robberies in south Trinidad after they arrested two members of a robbery gang on Monday who were found in possession of a loaded pistol.
Reports stated that around 1.05 pm, Cpl Thompson and PC Andrews were patrolling the Point Fortin Main Road when they stopped a silver Nissan Tiida with two occupants near the Point Fortin East Secondary School.
The officers became suspicious and as they approached the vehicle sped off.
The car was intercepted near the Dunlop roundabout. Police said they found a .9 mm pistol with five rounds of ammunition in the centre console.
The occupants, a 48-year-old labourer from Egypt Village, Point Fortin, and a 25-year-old labourer from Gonzales Village, Guapo, were arrested and detained at the Point Fortin Police Station where they were charged by PC Andrews.
Police said they would also be questioned in connection with a series of robberies over the past two months in Siparia and South Oropouche.
The suspects are expected to be placed on a series of identification parades over the next few days before being charged, police said.
