4 Independents among 315 vying for Local Govt elections

A total of 315 candidates from seven political parties—as well as four Independent candidates—will contest the November 28 Local Government polls.

The Elections and Boundaries Commission issued the final candidate tally yesterday, following Monday’s Nomination Day exercise when candidates presented documents for registration.

The ruling People’s National Movement is the only party fielding a full slate of 137 candidates. The Opposition United National Congress is fielding 135, since two Port-of-Spain candidates didn’t meet EBC registration criteria, the UNC confirmed.

The Congress of the People’s nine candidates are in San Fernando (one), San Juan Laventille (one), Siparia (one) and Tunapuna/Piarco (six) The Independent Liberal Party has seven candidates in the Chaguanas area.

Businessman Robert Amar’s National Democrats party has three candidates in Port-of-Spain. Movement for Social Justice has 11 candidates—five in Arima, five in Point Fortin and one in Tunapuna/Piarco.

The National Solidarity Assembly has two candidates in Couva/Talparo, one in Mayaro/Rio Claro, one in Princes Town and five in Sangre Grande.

The four Independents are spread over Port-of-Spain (one), San Juan/Laventille (one) and Siparia (two)
