The following data on the post-hurricane situation in Haiti was provided by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), one of the international organisations co-ordinating the humanitarian response in that devastated country:
• 750,000 people are estimated to be in need of humanitarian assistance.
• An estimated 1.3 million people have been affected by Hurricane Matthew.
• A total of 271 people were killed by Hurricane Matthew in seven departments from south-east to northwest, according to data available on October 7.
• Up to 80 per cent of harvest is lost in some areas, according to the World Food Programme (WFP).
• WFP has 25 tons of food in Jeremie (Grand-Anse) for immediate distribution. The food rations will enable 9,000 people to meet their immediate food needs for one week.
