Three months after the decomposing body of prison officer Rishi Sankar was found in the forest, a Princes Town painter has been charged with his murder.

Kameel Seepersad, 28, wanted to say something when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Rajendra Rambachan in the Princes Town First Court charged with Sankar’s murder.

But after the magistrate advised him it was his right to remain silent and advised him against saying anything in relation to the case, he changed his mind. The magistrate also told him he could speak about whether he was ill-treated or matters of that nature, but Seepersad made no complaints.

Seepersad, of Ashraf Road, Charlieville, was charged with murdering Sankar on a date unknown between June 21 and July 15 at Stone Road, Piparo.

Sankar, 35, of Perseverance Village, Couva, was last seen alive at Stone Road on June 22. He was attached to the security section at Remand Yard at Golden Grove Prison, Arouca.

His decomposing body was discovered by hunters in the Tabaquite forest on July 14.

Seepersad was subsequently arrested and charged by PC Randy Ramjag of the Homicide Bureau. The prisoner was remanded into custody and adjourned the matter to November 8.
