A third man has been charged for the $1.5 million robbery at PriceSmart’s Mausica branch in July.
Kurt Cupid, 44, of Orchard Drive, Moka, Maraval, appeared before Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar in the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Court yesterday morning, charged with participating in the armed robbery on July 3. Cupid, a father of 14, was not called upon to plead to the charge as it was laid indictably.
In addition to the robbery charge, Cupid was also served with a warrant for failing to appear in court for an unrelated fraud case since 2012.
His attorney, Alexia Romero, explained that the magistrate hearing that case had agreed to do it in his absence, as he had to travel to and from the United Kingdom regularly over the past years to attend hearings in a custody battle for two of his children. Romero also complained that her client was not properly fed and was not allowed to speak to her while in police custody over the past week.
Police prosecutor Insp Wayne Mohammed asked Ayers-Caesar to deny Cupid bail, as he said his criminal record tracing was not available and police needed to verify his address. Ayers-Caesar agreed and remanded him into custody. The matter was transferred to the Arima Magistrates’ Court, where Cupid will reappear on Friday.
