Today is the last day for police officers, who obtained special voter status, to cast their ballots.
In a statement yesterday, the T&T Police Public Affairs Unit said police officers who applied for and were granted special elector status by the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) must vote today between 9 am and 3 pm, at the location of their returning officer, in the electoral district where they reside.
“Officers who have obtained special elector status but have not received their special ballots should immediately contact Inspector Andy Boyce at 759-1957 or Police Administration in Port-of-Spain,” the release said.
Once registered as a special voter, officers will not be allowed to vote tomorrow.
“Officers are therefore strongly urged to make use of their special elector status and vote on Sunday (today). Only police officers who were not granted special elector status can cast their ballot during the course of the General Election, on Monday 7, as their names would be on the general list of electors.
“It should be noted that the names of the special electors have been removed from the general electors binder that would be available,” the statement said.
Over 300 police officers have been registered as special voters. On Friday, officers complained that they were being denied their right to vote as the EBC had failed to organise ballot envelopes for more than 100 officers. The EBC’s Chief Elections Officer Ramesh Nanan said investigations were launched into the officers’ complaints.
