Thirteen-year-old Niam Mohammed who survived a fatal accident which claimed the life of his mother is scared he may suffer the same fate.
The teenager suffered fractures to his spine and hip and is warded at the San Fernando Teaching Hospital in a stable condition. He was sleep in the back of the car, driven by his mother Carolyn Mohammed, when a delivery truck travelling in the other direction collided with their vehicle around 2.30 pm along the M1 Ring Road, Princes Town, on Tuesday.
Mohammed, 42, a hairstylist, died on the scene. She had just picked up Niam at his school—Princes Town Junior—and was on her way to pick up her other son, Saleem, 15, at ASJA Boys’ in San Fernando when the accident happened.
Speaking with reporters at the family’s home at St Croix Road, Princes Town, yesterday, Mohammed’s brother, Kevin, said Niam was asleep in the vehicle when the accident took place “so he get pelt all how.
“He under some pain. They run tubes in him and pumping his stomach. He moving his toes but he cannot move. The doctors say he has to stay flat on the bed. His father told him last night that his mother died. He only asking if he will die how he hook up on tubes,” he added.
Kevin said he had been hearing conflicting stories about how the accident occurred but he wanted justice for his only sister who was the eldest of four siblings.
“Her husband taking it light right now but when this blow over he will be taking action,” he added. He said his sister was in the process of moving into her new home which they recently built at Point Coco, Granville.
Mohammed’s husband of 18 years, Shazim Mohammed, went to the Forensic Science Centre, St James, to witness the autopsy. However, it was postponed for today. Police have taken a statement from the truck driver and are continuing investigations.
