A man who claimed he was innocent vented his frustration by assaulting two policemen after he was convicted and fined in the San Fernando Magistrates Court has been jailed for five months.
Kevin King, 28, remained quiet when San Fernando Fourth Court Magistrate Natalie Diop pronounced sentence on him on Thursday after he pleaded guilty to four charges arising out of the altercation he had with the police the previous day.
The Marabella man became upset after Senior Magistrate Nanette Forde-John found him guilty of two charges of possession of marijuana and resisting arrest. King, who claimed he was framed by the police officers, was given one month to pay fines totalling $800.
As he was being led away, King had an altercation with two officers, SRP Dustin John and Bruce Lee, at the entrance to the First Court. He was arrested and subsequently charged by Cpl Ramsamooj with assaulting the officers, resisting arrest and using obscene language.
Prosecutor Cleyon Seedan told the court King became agitated after the ruling and began speaking loudly to John who warned him to quiet down because court was in session.
As they left the court, however, King cursed and pushed John who fell to the ground, sustaining injuries.
Lee went to his colleague’s assistance and was also pushed away. With the assistance of other officers, King was subdued.
Both officers, who are currently on leave, were treated at hospital and discharged.
In a plea for leniency, attorney Ainsley Lucky said King was frustrated because his court matters had been pending since 2012.
King was sentenced to five months imprisonment on the assault charges and was jailed for 15 days on the obscene language charge.
