Kern Alexis, son of reputed gang leader and Chaguanas businessman Selwyn “Robocop” Alexis, yesterday thanked Allah for saving his life from an alleged arson attack at his home at Enterprise, Chaguanas.
Fire prevention officers had not ruled out arson after initial investigations but the T&T Guardian was told a “foreign substance” was found under a bed located in a back bedroom of the split-level house, where Alexis’ bedroom was located.
It is believed the substance exploded, causing the blaze that destroyed the bedroom and its contents. Police suspect someone threw the substance through a window on the east side of the house.
Since his father was killed, Alexis and his older brother have been staying at an another location.
Yesterday, Alexis confirmed he did not usually stay at the house but felt the urge to go there on Wednesday night and sleep in his room.
“Had I done that I might have saved my apartment and everything in it because the time it happened I would have been fully awake,” Alexis said.
Alexis lost mostly personal items, including track and field training gear, in the blaze. Alexis was one of the medallists on T&T’s 2012 Carifta Games team.
The attack came just over a month after Robocop was ambushed and killed while at his businessplace.
Robocop, a father of nine, and Kevin Escayg were killed after a group of men, believed to be Unruly ISIS members, ambushed them outside Alexis’ carwash. Escayg was killed as he shielded his son, K’Chaud Scott, from the bullets.
However, Robocop managed to kill one of his attackers, Thomas “Hamza” Sharpe, a known Unruly ISIS member. Investigations are continuing.
