Police Commissioner Stephen Williams is denying that Special Branch officers doctored a report which raised concerns about President Anthony Carmona’s suitability to be Head of State, prior to his appointment.
Responding to questions from the media following yesterday’s service held at the Trinity Cathedral to mark the contribution of women in the T&T Police Service for the past 60 years, Williams said his officers remain true to their oath.
Independent Liberal Party (ILP) political leader Jack Warner, who served as minister of national security in the Kamla Persad-Bissessar government, made the claim at a public meeting in St Joseph on Thursday. Warner claimed a background check carried out on Carmona by Special Branch unearthed information on his personal life. He said the Prime Minister became implicated in the alleged cover up when she gave instructions to curtail the report.
Williams said, “We have absolutely no evidence that anything like that has occurred. In fact, I have made a check with Special Branch and no report was in fact prepared by the Special Branch, so that could not have been.”
On Friday, the PM denied having knowledge of a report that could have hurt Carmona’s chances to serve as President or giving instructions to law enforcement officers to alter their findings.
“I have absolutely no knowledge of any such report,” Persad-Bissessar said on Friday following the opening of the new headquarters of the Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (MTEST) in Endeavour, Chaguanas.
