Chairman of the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) Romney Thomas says a lack of material has delayed work to repair roads in San Fernando that were damaged as a result of pipe works.
In response to the San Fernando mayor Kazim Hosein’s criticism of shoddy road repairs done by the authority, Thomas said he had noted the mayor’s concern and it would be addressed soon.
In a telephone interview yesterday, he said: “We have taken note of the mayor’s concern and we are putting things in place to address it. We’ve had a little setback because we had a shortage of aggregate to conduct road repairs. We have sourced the required aggregate so we will be in a position to effect the repairs within the short run.”
During Tuesday’s statutory meeting of the San Fernando City Corporation (SFCC), Hosein said he had been overwhelmed with complaints from citizens over the state of the roads in the city. He ordered the corporation’s corporate secretary to draft a letter to be sent to WASA’s CEO Dion Abdool, stating the residents’ dissatisfaction over the state of the road.
The mayor said the residents were upset that the roads were damaging their vehicles and were also creating traffic congestion.
Hosein said Harris Promenade, High Street, Lady Hailes Avenue, Cipero Street and Pointe-a-Pierre Road were filled with potholes. The roads, which provide access to the city, were paved just before last year’s general election.
Hosein said he counted 15 damaged portions of road along Cipero Street. Work was being done to smoothen a damaged section of Harris Promenade where WASA recently completed repairs to a water line.
