The imams in the Masjids have a pivotal role in spreading implementable philosophies of peace, harmony, compassion, kindness and selflessness, ensuring that Allah’s benevolence spreads to everyone in T&T’s diverse society.
This was the message shared by President Anthony Carmona on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations.
Carmona said the country needed a road map for all people steeped in understanding, love, tolerance, mercy and forgiveness.
“There is therefore a need during this holy time for more listening and less shouting, to bring about a greater understanding, peace and sensitivity to those suffering the afflictions of man’s inhumanity to man,” Carmona said.
He said society must draw inspiration from the Holy Quran and the Muslim way of life and understand their utility in the establishment of a just and fair society.
“All are one in the eyes of Allah regardless of one’s status quo, socio-economic status, class or race for the fount of Allah’s benevolence is grounded in real genuine inclusivity, compassion, kindness and mercy.”
He said the world was filled with “seemingly skewed perceptions,” adding that men and women of peace are often seen as men and women of war.
“The terrorism of the minority also continues to create a warped perception and view of what Islam truly is. The Holy Quran is not a handbook of violence but a repository of peace, harmony and reformative knowledge.
“Islam has been coloured and tainted by minority groups who are bent on harm and creating destruction of their fellow man. We who know better must maintain our resolve and ensure that Islam not become a victim of ignorance, paranoia and fanaticism. Islam is a religion of peace.”
He said it was beyond doubt that Muslims and the Muslim community had engaged in positive transformational change throughout the world.
“Certainly, in our country our Muslim brothers and sisters are playing a pivotal role in the holistic economic, social and political development of the Republic of T&T as well as its democratic and social well-being and traditions,” Carmona said.
Carmona wished the Muslim Community Eid Mubarak, on behalf of himself and his family.
Govt wants to strengthen bond with Muslims
Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley says he looks forward to strengthening the positive relationship his Government shares with the Muslim community.
In his Eid-ul-Fitr message, Rowley said he valued the community’s contribution to T&T’s growth and development.
“We welcome your patriotic pride and we deeply appreciate your strong commitment to nation building, as together we pursue our agenda for national development,” Dr Rowley said in a press release.
“On this joyous occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, on behalf of the people and Government of T&T, I wish our Muslim brothers and sisters the peace and blessings of Allah.”
Rowley said the Muslim community’s goals of renewing old acquaintances, healing shattered bonds, revitalizing relationships and spending quality time together as a family should be emulated by the country.
“As a nation, as we join in the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr, we may take pattern from our Muslim community by resolving the disputes and disagreements which separate us from former friends, family and colleagues,” he said.
He said T&T citizens were fortunate to have the opportunity to share in religious ceremonies and learn from traditions outside of their own professed religion.
“This is an occurrence which many do not enjoy worldwide and indeed something that many would not even consider.
“Yet here in this country, we honour four religious traditions with a national holiday and we willingly open our homes to friends and colleagues, not of our faith, to share the occasion.”
Rowley said though T&T’s religious acceptance and tolerance were not emulated internationally, there were many lessons to be learned from Islam.
Kamla: Muslims an example of sacrifice
Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is urging citizens to learn from the fundamental principles of the Muslim community.
In her Eid-ul-Fitr address, she asked citizens to take hope and pattern their lives from some of the beliefs of the religion.
“As we celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, our Muslim brothers and sisters stand as beacons, showing us that wherever we must sacrifice, wherever we must rely on our faith and renew our humanity, the day of celebration will always come,” Persad-Bissessar said.
“As the Muslim community takes the frontline today by reminding us of the values and virtues of sacrifice and faith, we share our prayers with them, and we stand with them in celebration.”
She also expressed thanks to the Muslim community for its sacrifice and devotion to the nation.
“To the Muslim community and people of our country, we in the Parliamentary Opposition pray that we can all take heed of what you have learned from your sacrifice, and the wisdom you have gained in your renewed faith.
“The end of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr bring with it a renewal of hope and resolve to stand steadfast in our faith in God, our duty to our fellowmen and our dedication to our country.”
