A former solider was arrested on Wednesday afternoon after one of three people he robbed chopped him in the lower back. The former military officer and four others tried to escape in a waiting vehicle.
According to police reports, the former regiment officer was one of three people who held up a family at their Longdenville home around 2.15 pm.
After relieving the victims—two men and a woman—of cash, jewelry and electronic items worth over $10,000, the three bandits escaped in a waiting vehicle with two other occupants. The two male victims went in pursuit of the bandits.
Police said on reaching an intersection at Ravine Sable Road, the victims, in a pickup, rear-ended the thieves forcing them to crash into a concrete electric pole. Police officers who were responding to the home invasion came shortly after but not fast enough to stop the angered victims from chopping one of their attackers.
The wounded former soldier was found by K-9 dog, Matco, in some bushes police said. Two other men were held following a brief shootout with police while two others escaped.
Police said a Smith and Wesson pistol and several round of 9mm ammunition were found in the back seat of the getaway car.
WPC Joseph of the Central Division is investigating.
