Charles: A degree of satisfaction

Former presiding officer Kelvin Charles who is going head to head with secretary for Tourism and Transportation in the THA Tracy Davidson-Celestine, in this Sunday’s run-off Tobago’s leadership race, says another week of campaigning will shorten the time for healing in the party.

Responding to Sunday’s election process Charles said: “There’s a certain degree of satisfaction but satisfaction is tempered by a particular kind of soberness, because as we go forward we have to be careful that we do not fracture or injure the party, or the politics of the party anymore that we already have.”

He added: “And I am saying we have, in the course of the campaign, made it a little more difficult for the healing process so another week would shorten the time for healing and I am hoping that the situation is not exacerbated by the intensity that is likely to occur over the next week.”

Meanwhile, Chief secretary of the THA Orville London said he is satisfied with the voter turn out in last Sunday’s election.

London said over 50 per cent of voters turn out and this was the highest percentage of voter turn out in an internal election in the history of T&T.

The outgoing political leader of the Tobago Council said, “Let me first debunk a perception that there was a low voter turnout. In fact, the over 50 per cent turnout in this election was by far the highest ever turnout in any internal election in the history of this country. The highest turnout as far as I am aware, before this, was 28 per cent in the last PNM election and I think you know that in the case of the UNC, it’s mostly less than 15 per cent, so I want to congratulate the members of the People’s National Movement for responding in this record-breaking way in this particular election,” London said.
