A Debe man wept as he was sentenced to one year in jail yesterday for breaking and entering a house and stealing $10,000 worth of jewelry. Shairo Khan, 21, pleaded guilty to the charge when he came before Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington. Khan told the court he had been misled and as a result had started “smoking drugs.”
According to the evidence read by court prosecutor Cleyon Seedan, around 9.15 am on November 15, 2014, the victim was at her Debe Trace home with her front door open when she saw a man run through the door and into her bedroom. The woman raised an alarm and the man fled. Upon checking, she discovered a gold three-piece ring and a gold bracelet, valued $5,000 each, were missing. She made a report to the San Fernando Police Station.
On January 15, 2015, investigating officers went to Sumai Trace, Debe, and met Khan. They questioned him about the incident. Khan replied: “Boss, I really take them things. I thought nobody was home but the woman catch me. I sell the items for $300.” In court yesterday, Khan began to weep when Wellington asked him: “Why are you going around distressing people? You are only 21, why are you doing that?”
Khan said he worked doing auger piling, to which Wellington responded: “Well, you won’t be doing that for sometime.” He then sentenced Khan to one year in jail on each charge, to run concurrently, which means he will serve only one year.
