A family lime in Malabar ended in tragedy yesterday, after the boyfriend of a female police officer was killed when the officer’s relative intervened in a fight she was having with her boyfriend.
Joseph Logan, 31, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Arima Health Facility, after being rushed there when he was hit on the head by a relative of the officer who had intervened to stop the lovers’ altercation.
Police reported that around 2 am yesterday, Logan, a mason, and the WPC were enjoying themselves at a family lime at a house in Malabar when they started arguing in the yard. Logan is said to have attacked the WPC, but the relative intervened and a struggle began between Logan and the relative.
It is alleged that during the scuffle the relative struck Joseph on his head with an object. Joseph suffered a cut to head, which began bleeding profusely, and he soon collapsed and fell unconscious. He was taken by friends and rushed to Arima Health Facility but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The WPC, whose name was being withheld by officers yesterday, was also taken to Arima Health Facility with injuries and later transferred to Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, where she was treated and discharged.
Police said the WPC was in a state of shock and became hysterical on hearing of the passing of her boyfriend. Family and friends were also said to be traumatised at the death. Police from La Horquetta station responded to the incident. The relative was detained by police and is assisting them with their investigation.
Supt Hendron Moses, ASP Ramdeen and Insp Ramnath of the Arima Police Station visited the scene. PC Sutherland of Arouca Homicide Region II is continuing with the inquiries.
