Police up to late last night were trying to identify the body of a middle-aged woman who was found yesterday with her head bashed in an agricultural road in Debe. The body was found around 10 am by four men who were driving along a gravel road off the M2 Ring Road.
Three of the men, from Princes Town, said they were working for a lawyer who was interested in purchasing lands owned by former workers of the defunct Caroni (1975) Ltd.
One of the men said when they realised it was a person lying across the road, they turned their vehicle around and attempted to contact the Emergency 999 hotline.
They were given a number for the Debe Police Post but despite calling a few times, no one answered. The men said they drove to the police post and reported what they saw.
They then accompanied a team of officers, led by ASP Ramdeo, ASP Samaroo, Insp Gajadhar and Sgt Ramroop, back to the scene. The officers discovered the body of an Indo-Trinidadian woman, dressed in a blue blouse and black pants and wearing a gold chain, lying face down on the road.
A handbag was found near the body, but there was no identification card.
They said the woman appeared to be in her late 40s or early 50s. Up to last night, checks were being made to the missing persons database but investigators believed she was killed a few hours before her body was found.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the San Fernando Police Station at 652-3206 or Crime Stoppers at 800-8477.
