Kemroy Alexander, the teenager who died following a high-speed chase with police on Saturday, has been linked to a stolen car used in a drive-by murder in central Trinidad earlier this year.
Investigators said the getaway car used by the killers was stolen from a Cocoyea school teacher last February.
Based on descriptions and other evidence, police identified Alexander as the main culprit. He was never held for that crime but police caught up with him when he and another 17-year-old boy from La Brea allegedly robbed a PH taxi driver of a grey Nissan Almera in San Fernando.
Police said the 17-year-old of Betty Street, Cocoyea, who also stayed in Couva, was also suspected of several robberies along Scotland Drive. This led to residents calling for a special town meeting with police, in which they cried out for special measures to be taken.
According to a police report, Alexander and his accomplice got into a “round-d-town” taxi and on reaching Cipero Street, pointed a gun at the 50-year-old taxi driver and ordered him out the car.
The men drove off and after police received reports of the robbery, an All Points Bulletin was sent out and the car was spotted heading north along the Solomon Hochoy Highway.
Southern Division Task Force gave chase with support from the Central Division Task Force and while driving through Couva, the car flipped several times before smashing into the Indian Trail flyover.
Police searched the car and found a fake gun in the glove compartment. The wreck was taken back to the San Fernando Police Station for further processing.
Both men were taken to the San Fernando General Hospital where Alexander died later on.
His accomplice was treated and released on Monday and is expected to be presented in an identification parade related to several robberies around San Fernando.
