After gunmen broke into his house and ordered his friend to run, a 55-year-old Ministry of Health supervisor was shot dead in his bed yesterday.
The murder of David Young has shocked relatives who described him as the happiest man alive and not the kind of person to find conflict with anyone. Police were yet to determine a motive for his murder.
A report stated that around 3.50 am, Young, who supervises health inspectors at the Piarco International Airport, was at his home at Ramdhanie Street, St Margaret's Village, Claxton Bay, with his friend Hayden Hamilton.
Hamilton told police he heard a commotion in Young’s bedroom and as he went to check, he was confronted by two gunmen, one dressed in a jacket and bandana covering his face. The gunmen told Hamilton to run and as he went to the back of the house, he heard a gunshot. Hamilton returned after the gunmen left and found Young lying on his bed with a gunshot wound to his head.
Southern Division police, including Supt Yusuff Gaffar, Insp Don Gajadhar, Sgt Ramlogan, Sgt Sieunarine and homicide detective, Sgt John, responded to the killing. Searches were made throughout the village for possible suspect, but no one was arrested.
Young’s nephew, who did not want to be identified, said he did not know of any death threats or problems his uncle faced.
“He had no problems. He was the happiest man alive. He was working, he was happy, he had no children,” the nephew said.
He said he last saw his uncle around 5 pm on Monday in Couva where he had gone to visit a sister.
He said everything seemed well with him. He ruled out robbery, saying nothing was stolen from the house and his uncle did not have anything there that was valuable.
