Knowing that he would not reach his dying father Fazir Mohammed in time, 16-year-old Daqwuud Mohammed’s last message to his father was, “tell my daddy I love him.”
The elder Mohammed, 40, was shot dead on Sunday night after he wrestled a gunman who invaded their Moruga home and aimed a gun at his wife. With his eyes bloodshot, the younger Mohammed said he hopes his family gets justice for his father’s death.
According to police, Mohammed, 45, a checker at the Princes Town Regional Corporation was watching television with his wife Shaheeda at their home at Nayyar Avenue, St Mary's when a man called out.
After meeting with the man for a few minutes, he returned to the living room and a man wearing dark clothing and a bandana over his face stormed inside.
As the gunman pointed the gun at Shaheeda, Mohammed pounced on the suspect and fought with him. As Shaheeda ran inside another room, she heard several gunshots and later found her husband lying motionless on the ground with a gunshot wound to his head. ASP Samaroo, Insp Knutt and homicide officers went to the scene and searched the area but the suspect was not found.
The teenager said he was at Movie Towne with his aunt Zahida and other relatives when the shooting took place and had no doubt in believing that his father would have risked his life for his mother.
“I was coming home from Movie Towne when my aunt called my next aunt and told her something. I realised the tone changed in her voice. My cousin who was driving kept asking if something was wrong and my aunt just kept saying, ‘don’t worry, everything ok.’
“When we reached Indian Walk, Princes Town I said that I felt I should call my mother and tell her I was almost home. My aunt told me not to call her but when I called mom she did not answer. I called my dad’s phone and he did not answer so I called my house phone and my other aunt answered. She told me what happened and that he was alive at the time. The last thing I told her was to ‘tell my daddy I love him’ and she said ‘sure’,” he said.
Investigators are yet to determine a motive for the murder and Daqwuud said the family was also puzzled by it.
“If our family is in danger, he would stand up for them. He does not like to see them thing. He is brave, he is a strong man.”
He described Mohammed as a “really cool father,” saying he is the best father a child could have had.
