News that Government will be paying $1 million in compensation to police officers killed in the line of duty is of no comfort to the common-law wife of slain PC Anson Benjamin. Cherry Ann Foster, 33, said too often promises made by a government are not fulfilled.

"I am neither pleased nor relieved. I know the government promises a lot of things that don't really come to pass. If it comes to pass then I can speak about it," Foster, the mother of three of Benjamin’s five children, said.

During Friday's sitting of Parliament, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley said: “We will put in place proper procedures and proper arrangements so that persons who lose their life in the line of duty will have that kind of comfort for their families.”

Benjamin, an officer with 16 years service attached to the Ste Madeleine Police Station, was respondingto a report of a robbery at Chao Young Supermarket in St Clements when he was shot in the head. He died last Thursday at the Intensive Care Unit of the San Fernando General Hospital.

The funeral service takes place at 10 am tomorrow at the St Pauls Anglican Church, Harris Promenade, San Fernando.
