A man allegedly caught on camera last October beating an infant girl after she refused to drink milk has managed to secure bail after spending five months in prison. His Jamaican wife who is jointly charged remains in prison.
Dexter Gobin was released on Saturday from the Golden Grove Prison after a Justice of the Peace went to the facility bearing the documents of a man who had come forward to act as a guarantor.
Gobin, 33, had been granted $150,000 surety bail to be approved by a Clerk of the Peace III when he first appeared in court.
However, Gobin, who lives at Hutton Street, St Joseph, was unable to secure his bail as he lives in a communal compound where the land and property are jointly owned.
Gobin's attorney Fareed Ali yesterday confirmed that Gobin had been released from prison.
Unwilling to say much more, Ali said he was anxious for the trial’s start on April 21.
The preliminary inquiry will be heard before Senior Magistrate Gillian David-Scotland at the Tunapuna Magistrates Court.
Gobin and his Jamaican wife, Yanique Taylor-Gobin, were both charged under the Children’s Act on two counts of willfully assaulting “Baby Esha” during the period May 17, 2015, to May 24, 2015.
While Gobin was granted bail with conditions, Taylor-Gobin was remanded to the Women’s Prison after police officials learnt she was in the country illegally at the time of her arrest.
The woman had been in the process of preparing to leave T&T, before returning to apply for residence status.
As a result, she will remain in the custody of prisons authorities for the duration of the trial.
Regardless of the outcome of the trial, Taylor-Gobin will be sent to the Immigration Detention Centre, Aripo, from where she will be deported to Jamaica.
Ali yesterday said Taylor-Gobin would be free to apply for residence status following the trial and her return to Jamaica.
