The Bumble Bee Foods has issued a recall for thousands of cans of tuna in the US due to a potential health threat if consumed. However, none of the contaminated cans were shipped to T&T.

This confirmation was given today by brand manager for Massy Distribution Terri Ramkissoon. Massy Distribution is the company responsible for distributing the product.

“We did our thorough investigations and none of the products were shipped to Trinidad and Tobago,” Ramkissoon confirmed in a telephone interview today.

A release from the official Bumble Bee website stated, “Bumble Bee Foods is voluntarily recalling specific codes of 5oz Chunk Light Tuna in Water and Oil, due to process deviations which occurred in a co-pack facility not owned or operated by Bumble Bee.“

Bumble Bee found an issue with the sterilisation process that could lead to a life-threatening sickness if eaten. The company said in the US, 31,579 cases of tuna were so far affected by the recall.

“Under-processed affected products could result in product contamination by spoilage organisms or pathogens and lead to serious illness if consumed. There have been no reports to date of any illness associated with these products,” the release went on to say.

Ramkissoon assured that Bumble Bee Tuna was safe to consume in T&T.
