An Aranguez family was left in mourning after an accident in Trincity on Saturday which claimed the lives of a 39-year-old woman and her 12-year-old son and left her 18-year-old daughter warded in hospital with serious injuries.

According to police reports, around 5 pm, Kavita Mohammed, her husband Reza, and their children Justin and Aliee were driving in the west bound lane of the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, when the driver they had hired to take them to horse racing at the Arima Race Club, Santa Rosa, lost control of the vehicle after a tyre blew out.

The car veered left over a low bridge and then crashed into a river which intersects the highway. Motorists who witnessed the accident stopped to give assistance and, with the help of police and fire officers, managed to remove the family and the driver from the overturned wreck.

Mohammed, a housewife, and Justin, a Form One student of the San Juan Secondary School were pronounced dead on the scene, while Reza and Aliee were taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope. Reza and the unidentified driver, both sustained minor injuries and were treated and discharged, late Saturday night, while Aliee, who suffered a broken leg, remained warded in a serious condition at hospital.

When a news team from the T&T Guardian visited the family’s home yesterday afternoon, Reza—who was on the way to visit his daughter in hospital—was too emotional to speak to media personnel. Mohammed and Justin’s funeral is expected to take place later this week after relatives who live abroad arrive in Trinidad.

Meanwhile, police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a woman who was killed while attempting to cross the highway near the Piarco intersection on Friday night.

Police said around 8.30 pm, the woman, of African decent, ran across the west bound lane when she was struck by a Nissan B-14 taxi. The victim, in a black short pants and a white T-shirt, crashed into the car’s windshield and landed on the road. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

— Anyone who may be able to assist police in identifying the victim are asked to contact the Piarco Police Station at 669–4366.
