Although triplets Niah, Aaliyah and Emma-Lee Charles are only three days old, they have already been taken off their ventilators in the Neonatal wing of the San Fernando General Hospital.

The triplets were born via C-section at 11.34 am on Carnival Tuesday to first-time parents Jason Charles and Shinette Samuel-Charles at the hospital. The girls were the first set of triplets to be born at the hospital for 2016.

Speaking yesterday, Charles said the girls were doing well and their mother had already been discharged from hospital.

“Mommy came home this morning, she is doing a lot better and the girls are just excellent,” he said.

“Two of them were on ventilators and the doctors were able to take them off the machines and they are breathing on their own now.”

Charles said his girls were also being weaned on baby formula, having been fed intravenously since their birth.

Charles had previously said a C-section was scheduled for February 16, but his wife began having minor contractions on February 3. Her water broke last Sunday and the surgery was done by Drs Rampersadsingh and Jaggernauth.

“The doctors told us they are introducing them to milk today to see how they respond, so they got their first taste of milk today.”

He said he is still unsure as to when he will be allowed to take the babies home, but said he is using the time to put the finishing touches on their nursery.

“They were born earlier than expected, so right now we are putting the final touches on the nursery, so everything will be prepared for them when they are sent home. We are watching and waiting, hoping that nothing goes wrong with them, but so far everyday they are looking stronger and brighter.”
