A Special Reserve Police (SRP) sergeant took his own life yesterday using his service revolver while seated inside his car outside a bar in St Margaret’s Village.
According to reports Sgt Radhay Lutchman, who was stationed at the St Margaret’s Police Station, left the station to get lunch sometime before 1 pm yesterday.
He drove a short distance away to the Garden Villa Bar in the village, where the T&T Guardian understands he used to frequent during his lunch breaks to play Play Whe.
He parked his silver AD wagon in the bar’s frontyard, a few feet away from the doorway.
A female employee of the bar, who asked not to be named, said she saw Lutchman come into the bar around 12.55 pm.
“He came in and started playing Fast Cash. He was sitting by the bar and laughing and talking.
“He asked me for a phone call and I lent him my phone and he called the person and asked them to call him back,” the woman said
She said minutes after Lutchman left the bar to continue his conversation in his car, she heard a loud noise.
On investigating, she realised the man she knew only as “Sarge” had shot himself in the head.
“I just hear ‘pow’ and when I went outside, I saw him slumped across the passenger seat,” she added.
The T&T Guardian understands that Lutchman called a relative and told them he was going to hang himself moments before he shot himself.
Family members went to the scene yesterday on learning the news but declined to speak to the media.
However, one female relative said Lutchman was known as a jolly, happy person by his family. She said he had been divorced for a number of years and lived with his brother in Garth Road, Williamsville.
Police on the scene said Lutchman had been employed part time for 17 years and was made permanent about a year ago.
Officers confirmed he used his service-issued .38 revolver to shoot himself.
ACP Cecil Santana extended condolences to Lutchman’s family and friends.
