Residents of the relatively quiet Carlsen Field say they have no idea why anyone would willingly harm 51-year-old goat farmer Mohan Baboolal who was gunned down while tending to his animals on Friday afternoon.
According to police, around 5 pm on Friday, Baboolal, an employee of the Ministry of Works, was taking his animals to graze when two gunmen approached him and opened fire. The killers then ran off and despite swift work by officers of the Central Division, which included the use of the National Operations Centre helicopter, the men escaped.
One resident said that Baboolal was well liked in the area and would be seen taking his animals out to pasture every evening. A neighbour, Mathew Sookhoo, said the killing had disturbed the community and his killing was a great loss to the village. Baboolal’s murder has taken the toll for the year to 246.
