National Security Minister Edmund Dillon says a new special anti-crime unit is expected to be established soon. He said that in response to questions about the on-going review of the national security apparatus in T&T. Dillon announced the review which he said included the disbanded Special Anti Crime Unit of T&T (Sautt)

Sautt was set up under the former PNM administration and disbanded by the former PP government. Dillon said yesterday: “There is a review of the structure that is taking place right now. It is almost completed and soon you will see a new emerging entity.”

Earlier Dillon told the opening of the $13 million Beetham Gardens Community Centre that the increase in deviant behaviour and violent crime must be curtailed. He said citizens must assist law enforcement in that regard.

He said the security services would “confront emerging problems before they became serious and entrenched.” He insisted there was the need for the support of citizens “to fight our nation's crime problem.” He added: “As crime becomes ubiquitous so must our national resistance grow.”

Questioned about the recent discovery of 44 litres of liquid cocaine in Canada in a shipment from T&T this week, Dillon said he was very concerned about the discovery and local law enforcement officers were assisting authorities in Canada with the investigation. He said there remained the need to improve security at the air and sea ports in T&T.

On another issue, Dillon also said if he had his way citizens would sing the National Anthem at functions instead of listening to an instrumental rendition of it. He told reporters he was “very serious about it because I believe that sooner or later if we continue not singing our National Anthem we will not remember the words.” He said every citizen should be “encouraged to sing our National Anthem.”
