A landslide victory for United National Congress second-term leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar seemed sure up to 10.05 last night.
As the night wore on, Persad-Bissessar’s Siparia constituency office in Penal became the nexus of party activity as supporters gathered to show solidarity for the returning leader. At 9.30 last night, Persad-Bissessar was already at 1,000 votes.
Persad-Bissessar is coming off four successive losses at the polls and is still contesting the legality of six constituencies after the September 7 general election. Persad-Bissessar is now in a legal battle to have the PNM victories in six constituencies declared null and void.
Even though Persad-Bissessar was not yet declared winner late last night, there were rumblings and rumours of possible discrepancies in the process.
