Despite heavily armed police officers now guarding several police stations the Police Service is denying it is on high alert.
Speaking during yesterday’s weekly press briefing public information officer ASP Michael Pierre said the police were not on high alert. He added that the armed officers were part of the usual guarding of the police stations.
“The police are usually armed at stations. It is unfortunate that you have never seen this before,” Pierre said, adding that the visible increase in armed officers around police stations had nothing to do with the arrest and subsequent release of Imam Yasin Abu Bakr.
Asked to respond to claims that Abu Bakr was being victimised Pierre said: “The police are conducting investigations and in that regard it does not matter who the individual is we will have our job to do and we will do it diligently. There is no target against Abu Bakr or anyone else.”
